"Quand j'ai envie d'abandonner BJJ..."

Giving Up BJJ

There are periods in your Jiu-Jitsu training where you feel great and injury-free. But at some point, it will seem that everyone else is improving, but you, or maybe life will get in the way and you feel overwhelmed… If you have just started your BJJ journey and never been there, trust me. You will.

There is a popular BJJ saying that states “A black belt is a white belt who never quit.” Ask any of the black belts you meet at Gracie Barra about their training history, and they will share personal stories of overcoming obstacles in their journey and persevering to black belt. But how to overcome the lack of motivation sometimes?

When frustration sets in, we need to manage our attitude to endure a slump or training interruption due to injury. When you need to focus on something else, reconsider your strategy and find your balance.

The important thing is not to adopt the “ALL OR NOTHING” thinking about your Jiu-Jitsu. That is to say that either you are training at your optimal schedule or…nothing. We must understand that in the course of years of training Jiu-Jitsu that we WILL experience setbacks. We must accept and adapt.

Having an attitude that we EXPECT the road to have some potholes and detours and delays makes it easier to see the bigger picture. You no doubt have had (or will have) your ups and downs. But staying in touch with the reasons why you started Jiu-Jitsu can inject some needed enthusiasm and get you back to class.
